About Us

History

Johara Dance grew out of the Josephine Wise Academy of Arabic Dance (JWAAD), which has provided in-depth middle-eastern dance training since 1990, into something much more than the sum of our parts.

Our work blends technique and expression from dances of the Middle East, Africa, India, Europe and the Americas, into a contemporary theatrical whole, which speaks to a modern audience. A public who finds it difficult to identify with classical or abstract dance finds Johara’s storytelling compelling and relevant.

Previous incarnations of the company have performed at Sadler’s Wells Lilian Baylis theatre and The Place theatre, as well as numerous other venues in London and South East England. As a company we have also toured the UK and France.

In 2004 founder Josephine Wise choreographed the opera Djamila by Bizet which was danced by members of the company in the Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre and Villa Ephrussi De Rothschild in Cap Ferrat, France.
